Monofocals
They consist of a single sharp focus bulb. The patient will obtain good distance vision, but would need glasses for close up (mobile, tablet or book reading, precision work or sewing) and for intermediate distance (mainly computer work). Sometimes, this may be the best implant option in eyes with a previous disease.
EDOF
They allow good distance and intermediate vision. The designs used to achieve this are diverse and are based on the extended projection of the light focus on the retina when it has already passed through the implant. The purpose of improving distance and intermediate visual acuity requires perfect centering to obtain correct vision. These lenses produce different focuses on the retina, with the brain choosing depending on what it needs at any given moment.
It must be taken into account that they produce a slight decrease in contrast. Sometimes, in night vision, halos or vision of luminous objects or points of light with poorly defined edges may occur. Although its design seeks to reduce the risk of this symptom, my recommendation is joint assessment before the intervention.
Trifocals
They allow good distance, intermediate and near vision. The designs used to achieve this are diverse and are based on the different way in which they use light when it passes through this surface.
The purpose of improving visual acuity at distance and near requires perfect centering to obtain correct vision. They have a third focus that allows more comfortable vision at intermediate distances. These lenses produce different focuses on the retina, with the brain choosing depending on what it needs at any given moment.

When the patient has high astigmatism, it will need to be corrected to ensure a good visual result. Lenses that correct astigmatism are called toric and have a design that allows the most curved axis of astigmatism to be corrected. Any of the 3 groups, into which I have divided the types of intraocular lenses above, have toric lenses that compensate for corneal astigmatism to achieve good visual quality.
